How to Make Homemade Laundry Detergent

Learn how to make your own laundry detergent, fabric softener, stain remover, and fabric freshener.

Laundry detergent can be harsh and irritating, especially if you have sensitive skin. Making your own laundry detergent is a gentle, cost-effective, and eco-friendly alternative to using store-bought detergents.

Gentle Laundry Detergent (powder): mix 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup washing soda, and ¼ cup liquid castile soap. Mix the dry ingredients first, adding the liquid Castile soap and vinegar gradually. This detergent initially is a thick paste, but after mixing thoroughly it should dry into a thick, grainy detergent.

Scented Laundry Detergent (powder): Mix 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup washing soda, ½ Cup Borax, and 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil. Mix until it is dry and grainy.

Hand-Wash Only Detergent (liquid): Mix 1 cup Castile soap with 1 cup water, ½ cup white vinegar, ¼ cup baking soda, and 2-5 drops of essential oil (optional). Use to wash your delicates or hand-wash only items.

Laundry Detergent (liquid): grate one bar of your favorite soap and place it in a pot with just enough water to submerge it. Heat the water and stir until the bar of soap has completely melted. Pour melted soap into a five-gallon bucket and add one cup of washing soda and one cup of borax. Add 3-4 gallons of hot water and stir the mixture. Let the mixture sit overnight. It will become a thick gel. Use 1/2-3/4 of a cup for a full load of laundry. Cover liquid detergent when not in use.

Fabric Softener (liquid): Mix 1 cup baking soda, 6 cups distilled white vinegar, 8 cups water, and 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional) in a large plastic container. Mix well before using. Use one cup in place of fabric softener.

Stain Remover: Mix 1 cup hot water, ½ cup baking soda, and ½ cup hydrogen peroxide. Test a small portion of clothes to ensure that discoloration will not occur. Soak stained clothes for 20 minutes or more. Rinse and wash clothes as usual.

Fabric Refreshing Spray: Sometimes you simply don't have time to wash the item you want to wear right away. Use this simple spray to freshen up any outfit. Mix ¼ cup baking soda, ¼ cup distilled white vinegar, 2-5 drops of your favorite essential oil, and 2 cups of water. This also works well on carpet, sheets, and bedding. Use a few sprays from a spray-bottle to freshen up fabrics and clothes.
